A Zen yoga mat is an alternative to a traditional sticky mat. It is made of cotton, but once it is a little damp from perspiration it will not slip. In India it is common to spray a little water at the head and feet position at the start of practice to prevent slipping.

A Zen yoga mat is typically made of organic cotton. Look for mats that are toxin and pesticide-free and are "fair trade." Usually this will be specified on the Web site.

If using an organic Zen yoga mat didn't seem eco-friendly enough to you, there is now an even more environmentally sound option. Some manufacturers are introducing a biodegradable mat. Some suggest this may be just a marketing ploy, but to others it calls to mind how yoga and Zen teach practices that mirror the cycles of life.
