A
yoga video does not take the place of an instructor, but goes a long
way to introducing people to yoga or substituting for an instructor
if you can’t afford classes every day. You can find videos with
any of the more common styles of yoga portrayed – sometimes
by a whole class, sometimes by just a couple of instructors demonstrating
different degrees of difficulty.
Some yoga beginners are intimidated to go to a class if they’ve
never practiced yoga before. A yoga video can really still a lot of
those worries. It will give the beginning a chance to try out the
poses in the privacy of their own home so they don’t have to
worry about falling over in front of a class.
By the same token, working with a live instructor is important for
a beginner. If you begin practicing with bad technique, you might
never enjoy yoga, or receive the full benefits of mind/body unity
and strength that come with practicing yoga. A yoga video can be a
good place to begin, but should not take the place of a live instructor.
