Yoga
products are a collection of gear, props, and media that can all enhance
your yoga practice. Some of the most popular yoga gear includes mat,
ball, and bag. Props are tools that will help you stretch deeper or
offer resistance training such as grip blocks, straps, body lifts
(for head stands), and Salubrion meditation chairs.
Iyengar yoga is a variation which heavily incorporates the use of
props like blocks, straps, wedges, cushions and sand bags. Said props
are meant to support students and make difficult postures (asanas)
easier for beginners. It’s also useful for sick or tired students
to enjoy the health benefits of strength building without exerting
too much muscular effort.
Yoga mats are valuable products because they provide a safe stretching
environment. “Sticky mats,” the most popular style, have
a tacky surface that won’t allow dangerous slipping. Stability
is the key to a successful and safe workout. Sticky mats aren’t
well known for their padding but thicker styles are now being produced,
even though these are a tad more pricy. Many people prefer to by a
traditional sticky mat and then add their own padding underneath;
this lets individuals control the level of cushioning depending on
the difficulty level of the exercises. Remaining in complex poses
is difficult already, but exercising shouldn’t be exacerbated
by slippery training facilities. Those with latex allergies should
consider a cotton mat. Cotton is a versatile material and very easy
to care for (washer-safe), and unlike rubber mats, cotton can be left
out in the sun without suffering too much damage.
Other yoga products could include media such as books, posters, DVDs,
and videos that will aid the learning process. Books can illustrate
poses and explain how the pose helps your body and mind. DVDs are
a good way to learn the fundamentals of yoga in the privacy of your
own home. It’s often unsettling to try out a new activity in
front a group of seasoned veterans. Luckily, there are yoga DVDs that
teach introductory postures, proper body alignment, controlled/relaxed
breathing techniques (pranayama), and final relaxation/meditations.
For those who are seeking a basic DVD, many instructors recommend
“Yoga for Inflexible People” as one of the most popular
instructional DVDs.
Yoga clothing should provide enough comfort to move around freely
without resistance. T-shirts, tank tops, pants, capris (3/4 pants)
and shorts are all acceptable yoga wear. Cotton is a staple for most
clothing, but hemp has recently become a very popular substitute.
Hemp is one of the softest, long-lasting materials on the planet.
Unlike cotton, hemp wears in with age and becomes stronger through
repeated use.
In short, yoga products are not required to learn yoga, but these
products are helpful and convenient for practitioners who yearn to
know more about the yoga lifestyle.
